Sonya Jo Young, the daughter of Lawson Junior and Joan (Neal) Young, was born August 18, 1963 at Des Moines, Iowa and departed this life April 1, 2013 at her home in Jefferson, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 49 years, 7 months and 13 days.
Sonya and her two sisters were raised by their grandparents, Lawson Isaac and Alta Young in Jefferson. Sonya attended and graduated from the Jefferson High School in 1981. She then attended Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville, Missouri. After two years, Sonya returned to Jefferson and worked as the children's librarian at the Jefferson Library from 1983 to 1998. She then worked 12 years as a billing specialist for Trimark Physician Group in Fort Dodge. Sonya developed colon cancer and was forced to retire in 2011.
Sonya enjoyed knitting, sewing, spending time with her friends and especially with her nephews and she was a lover of cats.
Sonya is survived by her mother, Joan Heskett of Waukee, two sisters; La Jo Young of Des Moines and Kimberly Richards of Coon Rapids, two nephews, Tyler Hunter and Cole Richards and a great-grand-nephew, Douglas Hunter. She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents, Lawson Isaac and Alta Young.
A celebration of Sonya life was held at 10:30 AM on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Jefferson with Rev. Bob McKnight officiating. Burial was made in the Jefferson City Cemetery. Taped musical selections, "The Climb", "Draw Me Nearer", "I Hope You Dance" and "Shadow of the Day" were played at the service.
Serving as casket bearer were Jamie Neal, Norm Zollars, Robert Gustin, Jared Patrick, Donny Miner and Steve McCoy. Honorary bearers were Mark Cranston, Tyler Hunter, Cole Richards and Jaxon Hunter.
