Fred D. "Shug" "Mr. B" Burnett, of Gary, IN, formerly of West Point, Mississippi was born on July 3, 1920 and passed away on March 28, 2013 at the age of 92. He attended Town Creek School and served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a retiree of the U.S. Steel-Gary Works and the first black Supervisor of the Blast Furnace. Fred also owned a trucking business, assisted with the creation of B&R Cleaners, and invested in real estate. Fred was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Canary Burnett; three sons, Andrew, Reginald, and Fred Burnett; seven brothers, six sisters; one grandson; and one great granddaughter. He leaves to cherish his memories: ten children, Deloris (Colton) Hall of Houston, TX, Marethia Burnett, Marvelle Barksdale, Vanessa (Edward) Crocker, and Ida Brown all of Gary, IN, Ernestine Herron of Long Island, NY, Derrick Burnett of Dallas, TX, Dewayne(Sabrina) Burnett of Conyers, GA, Calvert (Margaret) Vann of Milwaukee, WI, Dewan Burnett of Gary, IN; one sister, Doris (Walter) Harrison of Topeka, KA; 25 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Visitation for Fred D. Burnett will be held from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013 at Smith, Bizzell and Warner Funeral Home, 4209 Grant Street Gary, Indiana. Family Hour 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Van Buren Baptist Church, 2585 Van Buren Street Gary, IN. Pastor Dwight Mobley officiating.
