LOWVILLE- Carl R. Clifton, 87, formerly of Brookside Circle, died Tuesday morning, April 2, 2013, at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility.
The funeral with Military Honors will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville with Jeffrey and Joyce Combs, Pastors of Watertown Mennonite Church, officiating. Burial will be in First Mennonite Church Cemetery.
He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Nelson Thomas of Spencerport, NY; Brenda and James Hawkins of Goshen, IN; Marcia and Gary Robbins of Theresa; Maureen and Wendell Zehr of Watertown; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Widrick of Woodville; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his wife, Charlotte, who died January 26, 2010; two sisters, Ella Brotherton and Clara Lane; and a brother, Paul Clifton.
Mr. Clifton was born on April 20, 1925 in Theresa, NY, a son of the late Rex and Irene Dye Clifton. He graduated from Lowville Academy. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Company A, Ninth Tank Battalion, 20th Armored Division, and 2nd Armored Division. He participated in the liberation of Dachau, Germany. On September 4, 1945, he married Charlotte Lehman, at her parent's home in the Town of Harrisburg. He worked as a mechanic at Northrup Motors in Watertown, and later owned and operated Clifton's Garage in Watertown for many years.
Carl and his wife, Charlotte, were instrumental in starting Watertown Mennonite Church and the Agape Shoppe in Watertown.
He enjoyed hiking and climbing in the Adirondacks, camping, reading, woodworking, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling with his wife.
