Gilbert was survived by the mother of his children, Edith Abeyta; his children: Ben Gilbert Chavez Jr. (Cheryl) of Cerro, Jesus Francisco Chavez of Taos, Julia Olivas (Omar) of Arroyo Hondo, and Diego Chavez (Sheryl) of Taos; mother Andreita Chavez; 11 grandchildren; sisters: Mary Medina (Senovio), Consuelo Trujillo (Leo), Valentina Marquez (Jesus), and Berlinda Sandoval (Gary); brother Lester Chavez; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A Rosary was recited on April 4, 2013 at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church. Funeral Mass was on April 5, 2013 at San Francisco de Asis Catholic church. Interment followed in the Jesus Nazareno Cemetery.
