Lucia and James lived in Hampden, Sydney College, Virginia before returning to Vermont, where James served as President of the University of Vermont from 1826 to 1833. He redesigned the curriculum into four departments -Languages, Political, Moral and Intellectual Philosophy, and English Literature, making UVM the first school in the country to have a department of English Literature. In 1833, he became Professor of Moral and Mental Philosophy.

Lucia passed away in 1824. Jacob and Laura Wheelock married on January 7, 1830 in Burlington [Sentinel and Democrat (Burlington, Vermont) January 8, 1830 and Burlington Town records.] Several sources state that Laura Wheelock and Lucia Wheeler were sisters, suggesting that Laura may have been previously married.
