Hugo Alexander Krastins was born in Bialystok, Podlaskie, Poland on December 14, 1884. He was the son of Karoline Lepraski and Peter Krastins. By 1899, he had moved to Riga, Latvia where he married and had two sons, Evalds Voldemars and Alberts Nikolajs. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Marie Ludmilla Kauffeldt, on July 12, 1899 in Riga Latvia. She died about 1918. On Dec. 12, 1922 he remairried and by his second wife he had another son, Pauls Alexander Krastins.

Hugo was a barber and also worked with the Riga Opera House doing hair and makeup for the opera performers. During World War II he fled to southern Germany. After the war ended, he spent time in displaced persons camps in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1952. He first lived in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee and then moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to join a large Latvian community.

Hugo married a third time to a German woman, Maria, who he brought to the United States to live. He died on June 13, 1962 and was buried in Mount Olive Cemetery in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
