Pvt Startzman was with the 45th Division as an infantryman, and participated in battles in Sicily and in Italy until he was killed at Venfro. He was inducted in the service on December 23, 1942 and received his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama; he then shipped to North Africa for further training and transferred there to the 45th Division.

Born on May 14, 1915, he graduated from the Hagerstown High School with the class of 1934 and attended Columbia Business College. He was employed at the Western Maryland Railway.

He attended St. John's Lutheran Sunday School and Church. He was an assistant Scout Master of Troop 9 for several years.

He was the son of Nellie F. Startzman and the late R. N. Startzman. Besides his mother, two sisters, E. Cornelia and Rosalie, at home.
