Countess of Norfolk

Isabella was the second of five children and second of four daughters of William the Lion, King of Scotland and Ermendagarde de Beaumont. Great granddaughter of King Henry I and Ada de Warrene, Richard de Beaumont and Lucie de l'Aigle .

She was the wife of Roger le Bigod, married at Alnwick in May 1225, and had no issue. All of her siblings were required to marry English nobility, and the marriage was far from successful.

At the age of fourteen, she and her sister, Margaret were sent to King Henry II as hostages after their father lost a battle with Henry. The girls were kept under house arrest at Corfe Castle along with Eleanor, daughter of Geoffrey Duke of Brittany and Constance, who had been there to prevent her from claiming the throne. It is recorded that in June of 1213, Henry's son, John, the future John Lackland sent green robes, lambskin trimmed cloaks and summer slippers to the ladies, who were allowed out rarely and always under strict guard.

When Isabella was released she was required to marry Sir Roger le Bigod, the Earl of Norfolk. She was thirty, Roger was sixcteen. She was fourth in line for the Scottish crown before her nephew, her older sister Margaret's son, Matthew, was born. Roger attempted to abandon her in 1245 on the grounds of consanguinity but was unsuccessful, and had to take Isabella back in 1253.

Isabella died after Oct 1263, and was buried at the Church of the Black Friars, London.

This is NOT Isabel MacWilliam, another daughter of William the Lion of Scotland. He had TWO daughters named Isabel/Isabella. This Isabella married Sir Roger le Bigod, her sister, Isabel MacWilliam, married Robert de Ros.
