Bill Backus, age 58, formerly of Manitowoc, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, in Clovis, N.M.
Bill was born June 3, 1948, to Robert and Gertrude (Hoyer) Backus. He attended St. Joseph' Alverno grade school and graduated in 1966 from Manitowoc Lincoln High School. He entered the U.S. Air Force in June of 1967, and served 24 years as a medic, until July of 1991. Since then he was an x-ray technician at the hospital in Clovis, N.M. He has been a member of Catholic Knights branch 268 for over 50 years. On July 12, 1968, he married Nell Van Puttin in Utrek, Holland. He served in various countries, including Holland, Turkey, Africa, England, Germany and Honduras, as well as in Florida, at K.I. Sawyer in Michgan; and Cannon AF Base in New Mexico.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years: Nell; his mother: Gertrude Backus; three daughters: Trudy (Jody) Cole, Becky (Mike) Dlouhy and Natasha (David) Flowers; eight grandchildren; seven brothers: Don (Mary Jane), Tom (Lindy), Tony (Linda) Jerry (Judy) and Chuck (Barb), all of Manitowoc; Dick, Green Bay; and Lee (Lori), Appleton; three sisters: Diane (Jerome) Wagner, Cheryl (Todd) Terp and Carol (Kelly) Christiansen. He was preceded in death by his father and father-in-law.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 1, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Muffley's Funeral Home in Clovis.
