Dean C. McDonald, 88, formerly of Warren, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2013, at Crandall Medical Center. Born on September 9, 1924, near Gallatin, Missouri, Dean Calvin McDonald was the son of Orley Reed and Laura Elizabeth Shipley McDonald, who preceded him in death.
He recently celebrated his 67th wedding anniversary with the love of his life, Mary Alice Leopard. They raised two children together while living in Warren, Ohio, for more than 45 years.
Dean was a 1942 graduate of Gallatin High School. He attended Chillicothe Business College in 1942 and 1943. Then Dean joined the Army to fight for his country in World War II. He served in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands in the Signal Corps, as a high speed fixed station radio operator and a motor sergeant. After the war, Dean worked as a station manager for Empire Airlines in Idaho and Washington. After deciding to go into business for himself, he moved to Ohio where he managed and owned several small businesses, including Shipley Orange Store and McDonald Landscaping, both in Warren. He retired in 1988, and in 1997 he and Mary moved to Copeland Oaks in Sebring, Ohio, where he was very active with several committees and activities.
Dean was a devoted member of the Warren Rotary Club, Carroll F. Clapp Masonic Lodge as well as Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Warren, serving on many committees. He was also an associate member of the Union Avenue United Methodist Church in Alliance.
Dean is survived by his wife, Mary A. McDonald, his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Allen (Geraldine) McDonald of Virginia Beach, VA, his daughter and son-in-law, Jo Anne (Stephen) Thompson of State College, PA, and 5 grandchildren, Douglas (Emily) Thompson of Warrenville, IL, Mark Thompson of San Diego, CA, and Bradley Thompson of State College, PA, and Jason McDonald and Jenna (Sean) Walsh, both of Virginia Beach, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews in Missouri.
Final committal services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery with full military honors.
