Laura Elizabeth Smith was born on April 13, 1881 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. She was the sixth of seven children born to John C. and Christiana Diane (Remmele) Smith.

She was raised with her siblings in Marietta, where she received an education.

She was full German, both her maternal and paternal grandparents were born in Germany.

She married George Devol Padgitt, son of William Gabriel and Orena (Phillis) Padgitt, on January 10, 1906 in Washington County, Ohio.

Together Laura and George had 5 children: George Devol (1906-1988), Lewis W. (1908-1989), Frank Charles (1911-1986), Edward Woodrow (1912-1992) and Eugene Paul (1925-1995).

Laura was a Seamstress and housewife.

She passed away on October 9, 1963 in Marietta. She is buried at Valley Cemetery in Reno. At the time, she was survived by her 5 sons and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and 2 grandchildren.
