James H. Seay, a Richland County cotton, corn and rice planter was the elder son of John and Pauline Nassery Seay. He was born 1798 in Kingville, S.C., and died March 20, 1866 in Eastover, S.C.

In 1850, Mr. Seay owned 3,000 acres with 600 improved acres; however, by 1860 he had apparently divested himself of all but about 425 improved acres. A small portion of Seay's acreage went to the Congaree Baptist Church, which constructed a church known as Good Hope Baptist Church, on the property near his plantation home "Sand Hills," later known as "Laurelwood." His first wife is unknown (possibly Mary Counter); they had one child, a daughter, Mary Louisa born in 1825.

He married second Sarah Wilmoth Carter, daughter of Robert and Unity Fox Carter of Richland County on Dec. 8, 1835.

Their seven children were Cecelia Nassery, James Furman, John Robert, Elizabeth Anne, William Fox, Marion Jones and Thomas Nassery II, named for James' only brother Thomas Nassery Seay.
