James Leroy Otten, 73, of 1133 Payson Ave., died at 1:15 p.m. Friday (March 29, 2013) in Blessing Hospital.

He was born Aug. 8, 1939, in Bethel, Mo., a son of Roy and Celia M. Fuqua Otten. He married Barbara Smith on Oct. 3, 1959, in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.

James worked as a truck driver for Merchant's Wholesale and had been a supervisor at Midwest Premier in Quincy. Most recently, he worked as an automotive technician at Walmart in Quincy.

He was crazy about his beagle, Chance. James was well known as a joker and for his ability to tell stories. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the most important part of his life. He loved them all very much.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Vickie Miller, Robin (Cindy) Otten and Kyle Otten, all of Quincy; two grandchildren, Shannon (Gary) Jackson of Colchester and James Miller of Quincy; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Allensworth, Cole Jackson and Carlee Jackson, all of Colchester; two sisters, Kathy Otten and Mary Jo (David) Scranton, both of Quincy; and an aunt, Doris (Russell) Beatty.

James was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Harlan.

SERVICES: 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. James Riley conducting. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

MEMORIALS: Blessing Hospital.

ARRANGEMENTS: Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
