A Funeral Service Mass for Wiley Rudolph "Bill" Ashley of Many, was held Thursday, Oct. 31, 1996, at 11 a.m., in the Saint John the Baptist Church in Many. The Funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Kenneth Williams, pastor of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Ebarb. The funeral music was beautifully provided by Brenda Devaney, and Jody McCormic. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery, adjacent to the church.
Mr. Ashley of East Georgia Ave. in Many, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, at 9:49 p.m., at the Sabine Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Ashley was a devout member of Saint John the Baptist Church in Many.
A Vigil Service was conducted by Father Kenneth Williams, pastor of Saint Ann's Catholic Church in Ebarb, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., in Warren Meadows Funeral Home Chapel. The Vigil Service music was beautifully presented by some dear friends, Mrs. Gwen Cook, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Tracy Cook. At the closing, a beautiful testimonial was given by Mrs. Gwen Cook.
Mr. Ashley was born August 19, 1908, in Noble, to the late Leonard Clayton Ashley, and Lilly Litton Ashley. He attended school in Mitchell, Oak Grove, and Converse, and spent his childhood around Mitchell. Basketball, along with hunting and fishing were some of his favorite pastimes as a youngster. He was married to the late Beatrice Gertrude Robinson Ashley, (Be-at) on February 9, 1937 in Many. Before his marriage, he was employed at Frost-Johnson Lumber Co. in Ringgold, and in the oilfields from New London, Tex. to Illinois. After their marriage, they lived in Beaumont, Tex. For a few years, where they managed a rooming house, and he worked in the shipyards. They moved back to Many. They were both employed at the entrance gate office at Hodges Gardens, south of Florien for about 20 years.
After his dear Beat's death, on Dec. 13, 1989, Mr. Ashley spent his lonely days visiting friends and relatives around Many, Shreveport, etc. Nearly every afternoon, he would drop in for a cup of coffee with someone in their home or place of business. Folks looked forward to his visits, and truly missed them after he became too ill to drive anymore.
Mr. Ashley was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years and 10 months, Mrs. Beatrice (Beat) Gertrude Robinson Ashley; his parents, Leonard Clayton Ashley, and Lilly Lula Litton Ashley; his brother, Clovis Jackson Ashley; and a sister, Mrs. Lilly Murel Ashley Creech.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Murice Ashley Sovet of Opelousas; a brother-in-law, Roy Creech of Logansport; a sister-in-law, Mrs. "Sis" Ashley of Krotz Springs; an aunt, Mrs. Estelle Flemming of Pleasant Hill; two nephews, Rusty Ashley, and Calvert Cox; three nieces, Pat Tibbs, Jackie Lee Goudeau, and Billie Steckler; an especially loving and devoted niece, who was like a daughter to him, Mrs. Agnes Ann Schroeder Mussey (and her husband John Mussey, and daughter and son, Joanna, and Jonathan Mussey) of Shreveport; a special nephew, Tim Schroeder of Many; and a host of other loving and dear nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends, as well as his devoted sitters, Mrs. Gail Downs, Mrs. Isabell Branch, Mrs. Carolyn Borchert, Mr. Willis "Bubba" Alford, and Mr. Eulie Koss.
Mr. Ashley's pallbearers were Rusty Ashley, Shaun Steckler, Stephen Robinson, Ronald Springer, Floyd Giblin, Paul Gewin, and Johnny Mowad.
All funeral services were under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home in Many.
Our dear Bill/Uncle Bill/Mr. Bill, will be deeply missed, but he will live in our hearts forever, as will his precious "Beat". They are together again, happy once more.

Several years ago I stopped by to visit Uncle Bill and he mentioned that Mr. Hodges would tell him "Don't be too hard on those old people" Uncle Bill told me that he never really knew what he meant by that.
