U.S. Congresswoman. She graduated from Yakima Valley Junior College, in 1934, the University of Washington, in 1936, the University of Washington, in 1937 and was a teacher of English at Chehalis High School Washington, (1937 to 1940). She was women's editor and news broadcaster, in Takoma, Washington, (1941 to 1942), head of radio department for a Seattle advertising agency, (1942 to 1943) and for the Seattle Insurance Washington Company, (1943 to 1944). Plus writer and assistant commentator, for the National Broadcasting Company, New York City, (1944 to 1946), women's editor, for station KIT, Yakima, Washington, (1948 to 1957), office manager and medical secretary, at Yakima Medical Center, (1957 to 1958) and a member of the Washington State Legislature, (1952 to 1958). In 1959, she was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-sixth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1971. She was the first woman elected to Congress from the State of Washington. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, she was a member of the U.S. International Trade Commission, (1971 to 1981) and a Special Consultant to the President on the 50 States Project, in 1982. After a long career in public service, she lived in retirement in Rancho Mirage, California, until her death.
