He spent most of his life working in the theater, from Three Cities of Spain in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to the Fine Arts Center of Lynchburg, Virginia, to the Red Carpet Theater in Elk City, Oklahoma, to the Zachary Scott Theater in Austin, Texas. His repertoire encompassed everything from Moliere to Chekov to Ibsen to Rogers and Hammerstein. He directed, designed and built sets, and acted, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of drama. He taught theater at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Corpus Christi, and continued to act even after going to work for the IRS in Austin, because while we may all have bills to pay, nothing should eclipse the pursuit of true passion
After retirement, when arthritis made the physical demands of acting impossible, Mac became a tireless volunteer for the Lynchburg Public Library. An indefatigable reader, his love for the theater may have been matched only by his desire to have books maintained in alphabetical order. An avid gardener, diligent recycler, and speedy crossword puzzle solver, he was preceded in death by a lifetime's worth of well-loved cats, and boyhood dog, Peanut.
He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Mauldin, Rachel Mauldin, and Scott Mauldin; grandchildren, Jack Lewandowski, Max Lewandowski, Michael Herzig, Jane Herzig, and Megan Mauldin; his wife Frances and stepchildren, Laura (Frank) DeFlora, and Chris (Lydia) Campbell, and John Campbell. He also leaves behind dearly loved lifelong friend, Anne Horne, of Martindale, Texas.
Visitation at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos. Graveside service at Humphreys Cemetery in Martindale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Zachary Scott Theater in Austin, Texas, or the Public Library of Lynchburg, Virginia, or your local animal shelter.
