Son of Harry Hill who resided in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee.
James served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-25J #44-29574, 71st Bomber Squadron, 38th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Blount County, Tennessee prior to the war.
B-25J #44-29574 took off, with a crew of 6, from Lingayen Airfield, Pangasinan, Luzon, Philippines on a strike mission off the coast of Formosa (Taiwan).
They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and were seen crashing approximately 10 miles off Takao, Formosa.
Hill’s commanding officer, Captain Robert W. Blair, wrote his family on February 8, 1945, about this mission (letter in archives at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans). “He was on an important mission against enemy shipping off the coast of Formosa when his plane was hit by fire from enemy shore batteries and crash landed in the ocean ten miles off the city of Takao, Formosa. He made a good water landing and the plane was afloat for 3 minutes before sinking and a life raft was observed in the water. Due to high seas, crews of the other planes could not tell whether survivors were on the raft or not. A search is in effect and it is hoped that the men will be found...”
The entire crew was lost.
James was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
Service # O-836602
James is also listed on the “Walls of the Missing" in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. Find A Grave Record Number: 56783018
