Major General William P. Levine was a liberator of Dachau concentration camp
Major General William Levine rose in the ranks after joining the army in 1942. Major General Levine joined the Wisconsin 84th Army Reserve Division as commander in March 1967 after the retirement of Maj. Gen. Robert P. Schulz.
Obituary from Chicago Sun Times dated March 30, 2013:

Major General William P. Levine passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 at the age of 97. Loving husband of Rhoda Kreiter Levine and the late Leah Goldberg Levine; devoted son of the late Sadie and Joseph Levine.

Born July 1, 1915 in Duluth Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1937. Served in Europe as an officer in the 34 AAA Group during World War II. Following the war, William served for 30 years in the Army Reserve achieving rank of Major General.

Awarded the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Service Medal. Full military honors at Shalom Memorial Park.
Donated (by Mrs. Levine) certificates, plaques, personal papers, photographs, and regalia from the collection of Maj. Gen. William P. Levine (Ret.), who began his service as a draftee in World War II and was present at the liberation of Dachau, can be seen at the Prtizker Military Library. Levine continued to serve in the Army Reserves until his retirement.
PROCLAMATION: Mayor Harris proclaimed June 4, 2006 as Major General William P. Levine Day in Deerfield. Major General Levine was decorated by the United States Army for his meritorious service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Trustee Seiden made a motion to accept the proclamation. Trustee Struthers seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

'I Have Never Recovered'

Retired Major Gen. William Levine is 90 now, but 60 years ago he saw something that changed his life.

Levine, of Highland Park, was in the unit that liberated the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. I have never recovered from what I saw," Levine said. "I never even told my late wife."
