Lawrence Wilbur Gregory, Jr., 81, of De Land, passed away at 5:46 a.m., March 30, 2013 at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur. Lawrence was born on July 14, 1931 in Watseka, IL, the son of Lawrence and Minnie (Yates) Gregory, Sr.
He married Dorothy Irene Patrick on July 17, 1955 in Hammond, IL. She passed away June 15, 2008. Surviving are his daughters; Gayle (Alan) Brokaw of Pittsfield, IL and Sandra (Eric) Dawson of O'Fallon, IL, sons; Gordon (Sarah) Gregory of Decatur, IL and Curtis Gregory of De Land, IL, 8 grandchildren; Amy Brokaw, Gregory Brokaw, Patrick Brokaw, Paige Brokaw, Miranda Dawson, Mitchell Dawson, Gabe Scott, and Sadie Scott, and a brother; Charles Gregory of Watseka, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother (Gerald Gregory). Lawrence loved his family.
He was a vocational agriculture teacher for 34 years at De Land-Weldon High School. After retirement he worked for the seed corn industry in Farmer City, IL. He served as a De Land Fire Department Trustee for over 30 years.
He had a heart of a servant. He was involved in Faith-in-Action and loved to rebuild and repair bikes for children. He was a member of the Monticello Church of Christ. He leaves behind the legacy of his family and those he taught and crossed paths with over the years that farmed in Central Illinois.
A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Monday April 2, 2013 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2013 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home with Gordon Gregory officiating.
Interment will be in Hammond Cemetery, Hammond, IL. Memorials may be made to the De Land Fire Protection District or the Cancer Care Center.
