Son of Simeon (Sim) Sackett and Eda Hayes Sackett.

Although the obituary as published and transcribed below used "Sr." and "Jr." to describe father and son, the headstone inscription for Simmons does not use the "Jr.", so am leaving it off of this memorial unless other compelling documentation is provided to warrant using it. This particular obituary seems to have several spelling errors in it, which was not uncommon for that newspaper in that era.

The birth location of Canfield, Ohio was at that time in Trubull county, Ohio. It has since been 'moved' to Mahoning county, Ohio, for the purpose of his memorial.

The Jefferson county, Iowa death record was inadvertently entered with the name "Simon" Sackett. It would be an easy clerical mistake to make since "Simmons" is not a common name. His DOB was recorded as July 28, 1840, but will defer to the obituary provided July 29, 1840.

Simmons Sackett, one of the well known and most highly respected residents of Jefferson county, passed away last night at 11:30 o'clock at the home of his nephew, S.E. Chidester, nine miles northwest of the city.

The body was brought to the home of F. G. Chidester on 301 West Washington street this morning. The funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.

Simmons, Jr., son of Simmons Sackett, Sr. (sic), and Ede Hayes (sic) was born in Canfield, Ohio, on July 29th, 1840. He came to Iowa in March, 1870, with his brother Justus and his sisters Betsey (sic), Achsah and Huldah and bought the farm known at that time, as the Ramsey farm, one and one-half miles north of this city. He moved to Fairfield in March, 1912, and resided here until about a month ago, when he went to make his home with his nephew, S. E. Chiester (sic), and was there stricken with apoplexy ten days ago, and where he died last night. His brother and sisters have preceded him in death and he was the last surviving member of the well known Sackett family.

The DOD of 1917 has not been engraved. There was a specific request in the probate process for Simmons to provide the funds so that his DOD would be engraved, but there wasn't/isn't any documentation to show that funds were allocated from the estate for that purpose.
