HARPER enlisted as a Private in Company H "Mountain Tigers" (Harris County, Georgia), 31st Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Evan's Bridage, Gordon's Division, Army of North Virginia, CSA. He died 16 SEP 1862 at Winchester, VA. Also serving in this company were Private Joseph Warren HARPER , who enlisted 01 AUG 1862 and died OCT 1862 of disease in a Winchester, VA, hospital; and 2nd Corporal Seaborn J. HARPER (enlisted 13 NOV 1861), who died 24 AUG 1862 in a Lychburg, VA, hospital, and was buried in the Confederate Cemetery there: No. 7, 4th Line, Lot 177—Burton's.
Elijah (b. ca. 1837) and Seaborn (b. ca. 1831) appear to have been sons of Joseph B. & Nancy HARPER, in whose Harris County household they are recorded on the 1850 census. Elijah married 06 MAR 1860 in Harris County, Georgia, to Sarah J. GOINS, by whom he had two children: Emma (b. ca. 1861) and Elijah (b. ca. 1863), who appear with their widowed mother in the 1870 household of Sarah's father and step-mother in Early County, Georgia.
