John Turner was my 5th great grandfather....By: Rebecca Prillaman
(John's brother James Turner, Sr. was my 6th great grandfather, their father Richard Turner was both my 6th (Son John) and 7th great grandfather (Son James). For clarification on why Richard is both my 6th and 7th great grandfather, and his two sons were siblings, I started with each of my parents ( who both happen to descend from the same Turner forebear several generations ago), I counted generation to generation back to Richard Turner for each, with a result of a different number of generations. Even though sons James and John were sons of Richard, each had individual stories of dates for themselves,(e.g. date of birth, sometimes siblings were born 20 years apart, their marriage dates would vary, their descendants birthdates and dates of marriage could vary greatly, sometimes there were multiple wives, children from the various marriages had wide ranging birth dates) "therefore accounting for fewer or more generations leading from my family back to Richard Turner". The best way to determine your individual link back to Richard Turner, or his sons John and James is to research generation by generation, starting with your parents, and moving back in time, connecting all the dates if possible, as many records in Virginia have been burned. Today, there are thousands of Turner descendants in Virginia and across the country. (There were other early Virginia Turner lines besides this line).
