BIRKY, JAMES L.—James L. Birky was born to Ivan C. and Doris Roine Birky on April 14, 1942 at Pekin, Ill., and passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the age of 62 years, 11 months, and 25 days. He was the oldest of three
children.
In 1949, at the age of seven, Jim moved with his parents to Nebraska from Illinois. Jim received his education from Strang Elementary and Bruning High School, graduating with the Class of 1960. Growing up, he spent much time with
friends in the Bruning and Shickley area. In his youth, he was baptized at Salem Mennonite Church.
Jim married Janet Steider on March 21, 1963. After living on two different farms, they moved to their current home, the farm where Jim was raised near Strang.
Jim was a dedicated farmer who enjoyed many different aspects of his job. He also raised pigs, cattle, sheep and horses. Jim began his career as a salesman in 1983. Over the years he sold NC+ Seeds, hog feeders, puppies, and Merschman Seeds.
In 1991, he became a district manager for Merschman’s selling to farmers in southeast Nebraska. He built up his territory to include 44 dealers. Jim’s ability to relate to people made him a natural salesman.
Jim was a member of the Thayer County Livestock Feeders Association, for which he served on the board of directors and was named a Top Recruiter in the state of Nebraska. He served on the Strang School board for over 20 years.
Jim was a charter member of the Faith Mennonite Church. He served as a trustee and an usher. Jim joined the United Methodist Church of Geneva in 1995.
Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, going to auctions, attending his grandchildren’s many functions and socializing over a cup of coffee with his friends.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Janet; two daughters, Julie Richards and husband, Jim; Jodi Shuck and husband, Terry; three sons, Joe and wife Peggy; Jon and wife Kim; Jake and wife Penny; and 15 grandchildren, Justin, Jacob, Jesse and Joanna Richards; Kendra, Kelli and Derek Shuck; Trevor, Lydia and Sadie Birky; Ryan and Cole Birky; Jack, Timothy and Alexandra Birky.
Also surviving are two sisters, Geni Tirrel and husband, John; Donna Imhoff and husband, Duane; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were conducted from the Geneva United Methodist Church in Geneva on Wednesday, April 13, with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. The message was delivered by son-in-law, Jim Richards.
Special music was provided by grandchildren, Kendra Shuck and Justin Richards.
Casket bearers were John Aylers, Bill Birky, Warren Kennel, John Kremer, Larry Messman, and Mark Swartzendruber. Honorary bearers were the grandchildren.
Interment was in Geneva Public Cemetery.
