Poet. Associated with the Georgian movement in English Literature, his verse celebrated nature and rustic life in a traditional yet virile manner, and influenced such later writers as Ted Hughes. Even his war poetry expresses his love of the countryside. Thomas was born in London and made his living as a journalist and critic. He began writing poetry in 1914 at the urging of his friend Robert Frost, with whom he had much in common. Apart from six poems published under a pseudonym, none of his poetry appeared in his lifetime. Thomas served in the British Army during World War I and was killed in the Battle of Arras. His "Collected Poems", including the classics "Old Man", "Adlestrop", and "The Glory", were published in 1920.
