William was a farmer in Lovettsville who was one of White's Rebels during the Civil War. In 1859, he served in the 56th Virginia Militia and three years later enlisted in Company C of the 35th Virginia Cavalry. He was captured by union forces on May 6, 1863 and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. In 1865 William married Matilda Elizabeth Everhart. They had eight children.
