GRANGER - Joseph David Shepherd, 65, of Granger, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 from lymphoma, in Hospice House of South Bend.
Dave was born on March 23, 1948 in South Bend, IN to Joseph and Dorothy (Crawford) Shepherd.
Dave was a graduate of New Carlisle High School, class of 1965. He excelled in basketball and was a major contributor to the success of the New Carlisle High School Band.
On August 6, 1971 in Otis, IN, he was married to Linda (Larkin) who survives. Their mutual love and respect for each other led to 41 years of marriage. Also surviving is their daughter, Bryn Shepherd Fletcher of Granger and two precious grandsons, Ethan and Brody; Dave's sister, Judith DiAnn; and his mother, Dorothy Shepherd. He was preceded in death by his father and an infant daughter. Dave was known for his quick wit and intelligence.
He served in the Marine Corps. He was an exemplary employee at NIPSCO until a work-related explosion in 1993 forced him into early retirement. His strength and determination to survive such catastrophic injuries was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was an avid sports fan and his passion was track and field. He was an I.H.S.A.A. official for both Track and Cross Country. The pride and joy of Dave's life were his grandsons Ethan and Brody. Grandpa was an excellent role model and loved playing with them. He strove to teach them all he could to prepare them for life. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 11 am, in Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley.
