Julia Jean Gotthold passed peacefully away at age 94 on September 23, 2010 at her home on Alba Road in Ben Lomond, California, where she had lived since 1969.

She was born July, 1916 in Blaine, Washington, the second of four children of Arthur Cogswell and Gertrude Simpson, and grew up in California. She graduated from high school and attended Junior College in Long Beach.

She met Donald W. [Bill] Gotthold and was married in April of 1941. They lived in Berkeley and Long Beach, and sons William and John were born before Bill went in the Army in 1944. The family was stationed in Virginia at the end of the war, and returned home on a cross country trip with a trailer.

In 1950 Bill was recalled to service in the Air Force. The family moved to Oklahoma, and then to Tripoli, Libya in 1951. There were subsequent military stations in Washington, Ohio, Texas, Nevada, Alaska, Texas again, Germany, and Los Angeles before they retired to Ben Lomond in 1969. During this time Jean finished her college degree and worked as an English teacher in Texas and Germany, and then earned her MA in Library Science at UCLA.

In retirement in Ben Lomond, she served on the San Lorenzo Valley School Board, and was a long time member of the Republican Women of Santa Cruz County. In 1986 the Clio Press commissioned her to write an annotated bibliography about the Indian Ocean, and this prompted another trailer trip around the country visiting research and university libraries. She and Bill wrote the book on one of the very early computer word processors. Jean and Bill were long time supporters of Alba School, and its annual 4th of July picnic.

Bill died in 1993. Her older sister Catherine died in 2009 at the age of 98 and younger sister Marianne lives in Port Angeles, WA. Her brother died as an infant in 1920. Son William [wife Julie] is a physician in Washington, and John [wife Sieglinde] is an engineer in Sunnyvale, and there are several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
