Bio of August Berdon Fore:

August Berdon "Gus" Fore was born April 30, 1914, in Natchez, MS to John Blueford Fore (1873-1955) and Johanna Adelaide Berdon Fore (1877-1966). He had two sisters; Mary Beth Fore Herman (1903-1933) and Lillian Claire Fore Lloyd (1905-2001).

Gus lived his entire life in Natchez. He attended the Catholic Schools in Natchez and attended St. Stanislaus Catholic High School in Bay St. Louis, MS. He was a life long communicant of St. Mary Basilica, located one block away from his home. He was an early riser and would attend mass at 6 o'clock in the morning.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.. He was a Boy Scout as a youth and an adult Scout Leader for many years. He had a cabin in the woods and enjoyed the outdoors. He was in the United States Army and fought in Europe during World War II.

Gus, was single and lived on Main Street, in Natchez, with his mother and had a workshop behind the home. He was easily recognized around town, smoking a pipe, wearing khaki pants and work boots and driving his green Jeep pickup truck.

He was always occupying his time with projects or handy man chores. He often talked about water proofing work boots with polish he patented.

He had a small logging business and was frequently in the woods, creeks and ravines around Natchez identifying trees to harvest for property owners. He specialized in cutting dogwood trees into 4-5 ft logs, that would be carried out of the woods, on the shoulders of his teenage work crew. Dogwood was used to make cotton spindles. He also had heavy equipment for harvesting hardwood trees for delivery to the local lumber yards.

Gus died December 19, 1993 and is buried in The Natchez CityCemetery.

August Berdon Fore is a descendant of the Natchez German immigrants Broeg and Berdon families on his mother's side. These families are written about in the book The Story of Grandma Goetz (1859-1942) Natchez, Mississippi, published/revised 2020, written by Edward F. Hicks II.

Gus is mentioned in the book My Natchez Years 1917-1938, published in 1998, by his childhood friend Morris Raphael.
