George Perry Holmes passed away at his home in Castorland, Wednesday September 25, at the age of 76. He was born at Martinsburg, January 31 1842. his parents being Charles and Olive Holmes. With the exception of ten years in Onondaga county, his entire life was spent in Lewis county. He was a member of Bailey Post, G. A. R., of Lowville, having enlisted and served for one and a half years in the 20th New York Cavalry. Mr. Holmes was three times married, his first wife being Harriet Bradway, of Castorland, and to them one son. W. B. Holmes, of this place, was born. He next married Esther A. Alford of Turin, of which union the following children survive: Mrs. Angelina Rossman. of Mohawk; Charles D., of Port Leyden; Clark G. and Arthur E., or Syracuse, and Brayton A., of Oswego. A few years ago he was married to Mrs. Harriet Pickertt, of Castorland, who also survives. Mr. Holmes possessed a splendid tenor voice, and was heard with pleasure on many occasions In this vicinity. At the time of death he was chorister of the M.E church at Castorland, of which church he was also a member, and where the funeral services were held Saturday afternoon. The remains were interred In the family plot in the Port Leyden cemetery.
