Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Yale in 1862 and earned a law degree from Columbia University in 1864. In 1866, he moved to Chicago, established a whole sale grocery company and was the president of the Chicago Citizens' Association in 1874. He was president of the National Bank of Chicago, when President William Howard Taft appointed him Secretary of the Treasury in 1909. In office, he contributed to the Administration a businesslike management which promoted efficiency and economy within the Treasury Department. After he resigned from office in 1913, he was active in the US Customs Service and banking venues. He died at age 96 in Chicago, Illinois.
