Glenn Hugh Newton, age 78, of Athens, died on Thursday, March 28, 2013.
Mr. Newton was born on December 11, 1934, in Dawson County, to the late Carl Clifton Newton Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Foster. He was raised in Gainesville, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, then moved to Athens and received a bachelor's degree in business economics from the University of Georgia in 1959.
Mr. Newton was a retired Athens businessman, a partner in Newton Brothers Inc., and an active member of Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he served on several boards and committees. He was a life member of the Gideons International; a member of the Athens Lions Club, where he served as President; President of the Athens West Lions Club; a 32nd degree Mason; and he served as President of the Athens Shrine Club #1. He was also a long-time volunteer at the Potters House rehabilitation center, in Jackson County, and a member of the board of directors at the Atlanta Union Mission, in Atlanta, for over 21 years, serving as President.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Newton was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Leigh Newton.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Juanita Moore Newton; daughters, Patsy Newton (Thomas Jr.) Bryan, of St. Simons Island, and Teresa Newton Carter (Tom) Jackson, of Panama City Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Thomas Edward Bryan III, Marguerite Elizabeth Bryan, Ashlee Glennis Carter, and Ana Jackson; brother, Carl Clifton (Vivian) Newton Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, at Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Highway, Athens.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 1, at Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carey Gibson and Dr. Dan Crawford will be officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park, in Athens.
Pallbearers will be David Newton, Mark Newton, John Freeland, David Wortham, Thomas Bryan III, and David Phillips.
