He lived in Oakland until 1964 and then in Pleasanton until 1976. He then resided in San Ramon for the last 25 years. Bill owned and operated Melrose Meat Market on East 14th St. in Oakland for 40 years. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, member of Board of Directors for 25 years Altenheim Retirement in Oakland. Mr. Carstens is survived by his loving family: beloved wife of 64 years, Beatrice Carstens of San Ramon, and cherished daughter, Judith Ann Carstens Murray of Napa. He also leaves behind 3 treasured grandchildren and 5 adored great-grandchildren. He has 2 sisters still living in Germany. Joachim was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Visitation was Thursday, April 26, 2001, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and vigil was at 7:30 p.m. at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St., Pleasanton, CA 94566, (925) 846-5624. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, April 27, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd., San Ramon, CA.
