Elmer J. Zickefoose, 81, of Warren, Ohio, died Saturday, July 23, 2005. He was born Jan. 1, 1924, in Shinnston, a son of the late Freeman Zickefoose and Mary Johns. He was united in marriage on April 6, 1949, to Mary Simko, who survives. Surviving are sons: David and wife Darlene Zickefoose of Warren, Robert "Buck" Zickefoose of Warren, Thomas and wife Marian Zickefoose of Canfield, Neal and wife Sue Zickefoose of Vienna, and John "Jay" and wife Penny Zickefoose of Howland; daughters: Theresa and husband Gary Johnson of Warren, and Sandra and husband Bruce Bowers of Champion; brother Willard Zickefoose of Clarksburg; sisters: Laurene Tenney of Bristolville, Kathleen Carpenter of Buckhannonn, Donice Tenney of Buckhannon, Annabel and husband Mason Hoover of Buckhannon and JoAnn Mahker of Bristolville; 19 grandchildren: Rod and wife Gretchen Zickefoose of Warren, Kris and husband Wil Oddis of Boardman, William Thompson of Warren, Raymond and wife Amy Thompson of Anchorage, Alaska, January Zickefoose of Warren, B.J. Zickefoose of Warren, David and wife Laurie Johnson of Warren, Jeremy Johnson of Ft. Bragg, N.C., Jason and wife Dawn Bowers of Middlefield, Jeremy Bowers of Champion, Heather Bowers of Mansfield, Joshua and wife Jeanna Zickefoose of Leetonia, Alan Zickefoose of Cortland, Brenna Zickefoose of Columbiana, Preston Walley and Amber Walley both of Vienna, Danielle Zickefoose and Todd Zickefoose both of Howland and Jeremy and wife Michelle Lombardo of Austintown; great-grandchildren: Tyler, Katelyn, Madison, Summer, Billy Jr., Justina, Elizabeth, Issac, Levi, Austin, Trenton, Mackensie, Joshua, Evan, Kadence, Erin, Michael, Danielle, and Jeffery.
Preceded in death by brothers: Harold and George Zickefoose, granddaughter Mary Thompson, and great-granddaughter Daisy Nicole Thompson.
Mr. Zickefoose graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy, Aviation Electrician's Mate 2nd Class, served on NTS-San Diego, Calif., and received the following: American Arena Campaign Medal, Asiatic - Pacific Arena Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. He was employed as an electrician for Republic Steel before retiring in 1986. Mr. Zickefoose was a life member of the VFW. Friends will be received today, July 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral service at the Crown Hill Chapel Mausoleum. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2005. The burial will follow at the Crown Hill Burial Park. The Selby Cole Funeral Home in is charge of the arrangements.
