Melvin Carl York, 87, a retired carpenter, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, in Tyler.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Melvin York was born March 7, 1910, in Robertson, Ill. He worked as a carpenter and retired in 1985. He had worked at the Masonic Home in Arlington in the 1970s.

He was preceded in death by a son, Edward Y 63.

Survivors: Wife, Elizabeth "Alice" York of Fort Worth; sons, David York of Fort Worth, Lester York of Beaumont, and Wayne York and Bill York, both of Fort Worth; daughters, Gloria Purcell of Fort Worth, Darlene Phillips of Paris, Texas, and Helen Rhea of Mount Vernon; sister, Nina Malicot of Arlington; sister-in-law, Margaret York of Fort Worth; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
