On May 26, 1838 George Clayton Cox was born in Goochland Co, VA. He was the son of Henry L Cox (1791-1870) and Nancy Tibbs (1814-May 17, 1915.)
1850 Sept 5th George age 10 was living with his parents in Smyth co, VA, Dist 60.
1860 Sept 8th George age 21 was living with his parents in Seven Mile Ford, Smyth Co, VA.
1861 April 29th George enlisted in Wytheville, VA in the Civil War, 50th VA Infantry,Co E
1863 May 2-3 he was WIA in the thigh in Chancellorsville. He went home and his younger brother Alpheus Madison Cox took his place in the war. Health improving George C re-entered the war. His brother stayed also.
1863 July 2-3 George was WIA in Gettysburg, PA.
1864 May 5 captured in Wilderness.
May 17, 1864 to Aug 10, 1864 POW at Point Lookout.
Aug 15, 1864 to Dec 16, 1864 POW at Elmira
May 15, 1865 POW at Elmira, released on oath. Height 71 inches, fair complexion, sandy hair, blue eyes.

wife was Martha Ann Tibbs d/o Asbury A Tibbs & Elizabeth A Richardson of Smyth Co, Virginia. Martha Tibbs was born March 1841 in Smyth Co, VA and died 1918 in Smyth Co, VA. George C Cox married Martha Ann Tibbs on Mar 14, 1866 in Marion, Smyth Co, VA.


1870 George & Martha lived in Rich Valley, Smyth Co, VA.
1900 June 20 George & Martha lived in Sharon, Bland co, VA. They had been married 35 years, Martha had had 11 kids 9 living. Living with them was a grandson Malcum V age 17.
1920 Jan 20th George age 81 was living with his son Enoch age 49. George was a widow, Martha had died in 1918.
1924 May 20 George died with burial in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery, Ceres, Bland co, VA. Death date was taken from the CSA headstone application by Grady W Cox, son of Eliza "Grace Cox & Robert Madison Cox. His death certificate provided his birth and death dates.

Married 2) Arizona Houseman Aug 10, 1907 in Wytheville, Wythe Co, VA. Married 3)Bessie Mae Thompson Dec 15, 1937 in Burke's Garden, Tazewell Co, VA.
5)Lee Monroe Cox born Oct 1872 in Bland Co, VA and died April 3, 1929 in Abingdon, Washington Co, VA. Lee married Susan Groseclose June 24, 1894. They had 12 children.
6)Albert Dixie Cox born Oct 14, 1878 in Ceres, Bland Co, VA and died Sept 20, 1942 in Princeton, Mercer Co, WVa. Albert married Mary Zillary Brown Sept 27, 1900 in Tazewell Co, VA. They had 3 children.
