Harriet Richards was the first daughter of William and Clarissa Lyman Richards, missionaries to the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii). Harriet was named for Queen Keopuolani of the Sandwich Islands, who was the missionaries' first baptized Hawaiian Christian, having been baptized on her deathbed in 1823. Queen Keopuolani had chosen "Harriet" as her baptismal name, in honor of a missionary wife, Mrs. Charles Stewart. (The Stewarts, like the Richardses, were in the second company of missionaries to the Sandwich Islands.) In naming this child "Harriet Keopuolani," the parents honored both their missionary colleague and the Queen.

In 1837 Harriet and her brother Levi Lyman Richards became foster children (non-legal adoption) of Samuel and Emily Williston of Easthampton, Massachusetts, who raised and educated them as their own. It appears that she used the Williston name after a time, but took her husband's name when she married.

CHILDREN: When Harriet subsequently married (to William Smith Clark), she named her first child William Richards Clark; the second, Emily Williston Clark; and the fifth (a son), Williston Clark.
