William Romeo Powell was born on June 7, 1928 to Robert Maurice Powell, Sr. and Sally King-Powell. He returned to the heart of God on March 12, 2013. William was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Doris Burleson Powell. William built a stellar career in public education starting as a classroom chemistry/physics teacher and ending with Vice President of Student Affairs (Dean of Students) at Jarvis Christian College. His academic accomplishments include helping to fund the MLK memorial in Washington, D.C., a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and helping to start the Theta Kappa Lambda graduate chapter in Lubbock, Texas and the Theta Mu Chapter at Sam Houston State University. William is survived by his son, Darrell Powell; brother, Maurice Powell and his wife Gloria Powell; sister-in-law, Patricia Evans; and brother-in-law, Leo Evans. Additional survivors include, Renee Powell; Leonda White; Lisa Evans; Leslie Malone; friends from the McMichael, Jones and Melton families of Nacogdoches and Lubbock, Texas; a host of cousins, god-nieces and god-nephews; his beloved church members; former students; and many friends. A celebration service was held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, located in Huntsville, Texas. Burial followed in the Brook Cemetery in Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the educational scholarship programs for Jarvis Christian College, P.O. Box 1470, Hawkins, Texas 75765 and Texas Tech University, donations can be mailed to the Lauro Cavazos & Ophelia Powell-Malone Mentoring Program (Mentor Tech), Attention: Cory Powell, Box 45065, Lubbock, Texas 79409-5065. Services were under the direction of Cox Funeral Home located at 1305 13th Street, Huntsville, Texas.
