Obituary: "Mount Union Times" (Mount Union, Pennsylvania) · 14 Oct 1932, Fri

The earthly remains of D James Colgate, last surviving Civil War Veteran of Hawley, PA, and a native of Huntingdon County, were laid to rest last Monday afternoon in the Hawley Cemetery. Mrs Mary E Thomas, of Huntingdon, is a sister.

Mr Colgate died Friday afternoon, Sept 23, following a short illness. He was born Apr 7, 1848, in Orbisonia, Huntingdon County. His early childhood was spent on the farm and while still a very young boy, he joined Company I, 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers - one of the units that made up the famous "Bucktail Brigade" of the Civil War. He served in many of the important battles of the war taking part in the Battle of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and many others.

On January 24, 1872, Mr Colgate took as his bride Miss Elizabeth C Taylor. They went to live in Tuscarora Valley, Juniata County. In 1881, they moved to Hawley, where they lived ever since, having celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary there last January.

Mr Colgate was a foreman for the Western Union Telegraph Company. He served as Chief Burgess of Hawley and was a member of the Republican County Committee. He also served in the State Hours of Representatives. During President Roosevelt's administration, Mr Colgate was appointed Postmaster and was reappointed by President Taft. At the time of his death, he was President of the Board of Trustees of the Hawley M. E. Church an also a member of the official board. He had always been active in church and civic affairs.

Survived y his wife, his daughter, Mrs G J Hensel and granddaughter, Mrs Herbert T Axford and two great grandchildren, Herbert Hensel Axford and Judith Axford, all of Scranton.

He is also survived by four brothers and two sisters. The brothers are: George E of Canyon City, CO; John S of Bradley, SD; Charles C of Enterprise, OR and Richard L of Cumberland Gap, TN.
The sisters are: Mrs Louise Berland of Enterprise, OR and Mrs E Thomas of Huntingdon, PA.
