Doris Vanita Stephens, 86, of Sikeston, died March 27, 2013, at her residence. She was born in Mississippi County on September 23, 1926, to the late Carl and Votra Baker Holyfield Sr. In Sikeston, she married H. Herb Stephens on September 28, 1946. Doris and Herb had worked together all of their married life. Before they were married she owned a café and he owned a radiator shop, both on Smith Street in Sikeston. After they married they owned and operated Stephens' Bet-R-Value Grocery for many years. After selling the grocery store to Onis Learue and Lynn McKinnie, Herb began selling real estate for C. D. Alcorn. Two years later he and Doris decided to open the H. Herb Stephens Real Estate office in Sikeston. Upon selling the business they decided to winter in Florida and soon after developed the Stephens' Winter Resort on Lake Okeechobee, Florida. It is still in operation today under the same name. While living in Florida Doris and Herb were charter members of the Community Christian Church of Okeechobee. Herb preceded her in death on October 5, 1995. Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Ron Ballard of Sikeston, and one brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Fredi Holyfield Jr. of Sikeston. She was preceded in death by one brother, H. J. "Cotton" Holyfield Sr., one sister, Ruth Dover, and two nephews, Tommy Lee Dover and Rickie Lee Holyfield. She was a member of Trinity Chapel Church in Sikeston and had also been a volunteer at Missouri Delta Medical Center for many years. Visitation will be held Saturday, March 30, from 1pm until time of the funeral service at 3pm at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Liz Banks, pastor of Trinity Chapel Church of Sikeston, officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston. Memorial contributions may be made to:
