David Townsend was the son of Samuel and Priscila Yarnell Townsend. He was an amateur botanist, Chester County Commissioner, the head bank cashier, and prominent citizen. He was a devoted botanist who collected Chester County plants. In 1826 he was the founding member of the Chester County Cabinet of Natural Science, which became West Chester University. David Townsend was a life-long friend and business associate of Dr. William Darlington. A flower genus, Townsendia, was named for David. David Townsend married Rebecca Sharpless on April 16, 1812 at the Birmingham Friends Meeting, and they had seven children: Benjamin Franklin, Gulielma Maria, Albert, S. Sharpless, Anna Eliza, Washington Townsend, and Priscilla Ann Townsend.
