Marmaduke Betts was born in Indiana around 1838. Census records from 1860 indicate that he was living with the Hockensmith family in Miller, Missouri and was employed as a farmhand. On 24 Oct 1861 he and Sarah Hockensmith were married in Tama County, Iowa. He enlisted as a Private in the 6th Iowa Cavalry Regiment on 9 Oct 1862 at the age of 24. At the time of his enlistment, he listed his residence as Toledo, Iowa. On 17 Nov 1862 he was assigned to Company F of the 6th Iowa Cavalry regiment. Records indicate that he died on 8 Sep 1864 from wounds he received in a skirmish with Sioux Indians at the Little Missouri River, Dakota Territory. On 25 January 1865, his widow, Sarah Betts, filed for pension benefits for herself and her daughter, Sarah Pugh Betts.
