G.W. Pittman was the second of nine children born to Rene Marion and Mary Anne Howell Pittman, four sons and five daughters. He outlived all of his siblings having died at the age of 94 in 1938. The youngest daughter, Savannah born in 1862, died in 1937 at age 74.

He enlisted in Company B, 7th Georgia Regiment of the Confederacy during June 1861. His unit surrendered in Northern Virginia near Richmond at the end of the War.

On November 19, 1868 he married Emma June Howell in Cobb County Georgia. The couple lived in and around Cobb County where George was a farmer and Emma a homemaker and mother of their 11 children. With Emma's death in 1895 at the age of 45, George and his children, all but his two older daughters Beulah and Lula, migrated to Texas.

On January 1, 1899, George married widow Nancy Anne Carey Forkner/Faulkner in Comanche, Mason County, Texas. George and Nancy combined their two families into one household and moved from Comanche to Grandfalls, Ward County, Texas. They made their home in Grandfalls where they were members of the newly founded Methodist Union Church. George and Nancy were married 19 years until her death on August 17, 1918 at 64 years of age.

George remained in Grandfalls where his children continued to live and raise their families. The Sixth Generation of Pittman's continue to live and raise their families in Ward County.

In June, 1921, George left Grandfalls to live the rest of his days in the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, Texas. While at the Confederate Soliders Home, he married a widowed resident, Laura A. so she could remain in the care of the home as the wife of a Confederate Veteran. George Washington Pittman died on June 12, 1938, at the age of 94. He was buried at the Texas State Cemetery on June 13, 1938.
