Joe Fred Starr, age 79, of Fayetteville died Wednesday March 27, 2013 in Fayetteville.
He was born October 19, 1933 in Dryden, OK to Fred and Florence Starr.
He is preceeded in death by his parents and his infant sister, Margaret Alice.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Jo Starr of Fayetteville; brother Jon Larry Starr of Fayetteville; four children, Joe F. Starr, Jr. and wife, Rene' Starr of Little Rock; David Starr of Cedaredge, CO; Kent Starr and wife, Sara Starr of Fayetteville; and Shannon Starr Arcana and husband, Michael Arcana of Fayetteville. Grandchildren include Kara, David, and Christopher Arcana; Christina Arcana Guerin and husband, Jacob Geurin; Rachel Starr Sloan and husband, Neill Sloan, all of Fayetteville; and John and Gracie Starr of Little Rock. Great-grandchildren include Faith and Troy Arcana; Emma Kay and Kyleigh Jo Geurin; and David Carter Sloan, all of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by caretaker, Marieta Pilka of Lowell and friends, Jonathon and Plum Simons of Santa Monica, CA.
Joe Fred moved with his family to Northwest Arkansas as a child. His parents were school teachers in Fayetteville. He attended Jefferson Elementary and was a graduate of Fayetteville High School, and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a social welfare degree. While attending the University, he worked as a sports writer for the "Northwest Arkansas Times" and the "Arkansas Traveler". He was also a correspondent for the "Southwest American" of Fort Smith. He was an active volunteer with the Jaycees as a sponsor for young golfers in Arkansas. He joined the Sperry & Hutchinson Company as a salesman and zone manager and traveled throughout Arkansas and the surrounding states before joining Tyson Foods as a board member, later serving as a Vice President of Tyson Foods. He was active in the growth of Tyson Foods until the late 1990's when he retired. He enjoyed golfing with his friend, Rusty, vintage cars, pre-Columbian art, and trips to his second home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where he had many friends. Joe Fred was an entrepreneur with an expertise in real estate, developing Skull Creek Apartments in the 1960's, as well as creating the Automaster car dealership with his longtime partner, Daryl Hickman. He also served on the Board of Directors at First National Bank of Fayetteville.
Joe Fred was always there for his friends and family and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 am Friday, March 29 at Baptist Ford Cemetery under the direction of Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
