Death of Carroll County infant investigated by police

By Mark Campbell
Kentucky News Editor

Authorities in Carroll County are investigating the suffocation death of a six-month-old infant on Christmas Eve in English.

According to Carroll County sheriff Charles Maiden, Todd Alan Abling II, 84 Osborne Drive, was pronounced dead after efforts to revive the infant were unsuccessful at Carroll County Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning.

The sheriff's office and Carroll County Coroner James b. Dunn have opened a death investigation and may present evidence to the Carroll County grand jury in January.

The incident began at 1 a.m. Saturday when authorities received an emergency call that the infant had stopped breathing and had no pulse, said Maiden.

Carroll County Deputy Sheriff Randy Green and Dispatcher Ron Dickow were the first emergency personnel to arrive at the residence and they began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation immediately. the Carroll County Ambulance Service arrived shortly thereafter and continued CPR en-route to CCMH. Efforts to revive the infant in the hospital emergency room also failed and he was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m.

Both Dunn and Maiden declined to comment on what might have caused the infant to suffocate, however, they noted that the death is "suspicious" and an autopsy was ordered in the case.

Dunn has received a preliminary report on the autopsy conducted in Louisville by Kentucky Medical Examiner Dr. George Nichols. However, eh also declined to release those findings.

Abling was the son of Todd Alan Abling and Melissa Carter. They have lived in English about four or five months after moving there from Florida.

Todd Abling and the infant's maternal grandparents, Fred and Darline Wright, were at the English home on the night of the infant's death, said Maiden. However, he noted the infant was discovered by the boy's mother after she returned home from her job at the Admiral's Supper Club in Carrollton.

"It looks kind of suspicious, but there were no signs of abuse or anything like that," said Maiden. "We think there may be some possible negligence involved."

Dunn said the case is being investigated by his office as well as the sheriff's office. He said the medical examiner, Commonwealth's Attorney James Crawford and Bob Young of the Cabinet for Human Resources are also involved in the investigation.

"Right now it is a death investigation," said Dunn. "But when we get our facts together we are going to turn them over to Jim Crawford and the grand jury."

In a related matter, the father was lodged in the Carroll County Regional Detention Center at 4:35 a.m. Saturday on disorderly conduct charges.

According to Green, the disorderly conduct charges were made to provide a way to place the father in emergency medical detention.

"He was disorderly and loud," said Green. "He was pretty torn up over his son's death and he was suicidal. We detained him until his mother could get there to help calm him down."
