Roman Catholic Bishop. He was sent to the North American College in Rome. He pursued other studies at the University of Louvain, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1877. Returning to Newark, he was appointed to Seton Hall in 1877. He filled the chairs of Latin, English, Philosophy, Dogmatic Theology, and Liturgy, and held the position of Director of the Diocesan Seminary for fifteen years. In addition to knowing Latin and Italian, he was able to read and speak in French and follow conversations in German. He assisted in what were the outlying missions of Irvington and Short Hills. His chief pastoral care while at the college was the Chapel of St. Mary's Orphanage. In 1892 he was made Vicar-General by Bishop Wigger. He was consecrated the fourth Bishop of Newark in 1901. He was made Assistant at the Pontifical Throne by Pope Pius X, on June 3rd, 1910. As Bishop, until his health failed him in 1927, he celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph at Seton Hall College confirming young men and women. He died after suffering physically for almost two years.
