Charles Minton Baker was born in New York City in 1804. His father moved the family to Addison County, Vermont in 1805. Charles attended Middlebury College for a time. In 1825 he left Vermont to seek employment as a teacher or some in some other field. He wandered for a time through New York and New Jersey and finally arrived in Philadelphia where he found a teaching job and he began to study law. Charles practiced law in New York State before health problems forced him to return to Vermont. By this time he was married and had children. In 1838 Charles sought better prospects by moving his family to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. In Wisconsin he became a prosperous attorney, judge and legislator. He died in 1872. His personal letters and memoirs were published in 1928 under the title "Charles Minton Baker and the Pioneer Trail." Charles' grandson Edward Larrabee Baker was the editor. This is very readable book and it provides great insight into life in America during the middle decades of the Nineteenth Century.
