Son of Rev. C.T & Winnie Mathis Burgess; husband of Cecelia Sanders Burgess.

Graduate of Furman University; retired Baptist minister who served pastorates in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Veteran, US Army, World War II, and was Field Chaplain for the 16th Regiment South Carolina Camp No. 1268, Sons of the Confederacy.

He had also served as chaplain for the Wayne County Correctional Institute in Jessup, Ga., Oconee Memorial Hospital, and continued to serve as an interim pastor in the local area.

He was survived by his wife; a daughter; and a sister, Blondine Burgess Abbott of Seneca.

Graveside services: Tuesday, June 27, 1989; Oconee Memorial Park
