Hamilton Ray "Ham" Franklin was born September 17, 1854 in North Carolina. He was probably born in Watauga County, NC since his family was living in Watauga County at the time of the 1860 Census. He was the son of John Franklin and Martha Weatherman.

He married Sarah C. Stamey, daughter of Rev. Elias A. Stamey and Violet Mahala Dellinger on January 2, 1878 in Mitchell County, North Carolina.

Ham and Sarah had seven known children:

John Wesley "Wesley" or "Wes" (1880- )
Estella "Stella" (1883- )
Floyd (1884-1953)
William Hamilton (1887-1954)
Walter Isaac (1889-1918)
Harlan Pinkney (1890-1958)
Jones Clingman "Jones" (1899-1965)

Ham was a farmer and lived in Mitchell County, North Carolina most of his life.

Per his headstone, Ham died November 17, 1903.
