George E. Austin, enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of age 18 to "Go Off to See the Elephant!," an expression for a boy's first battle. From an old West Rochester family, he enlisted out of Norwich, Vermont on 8/26/62 as a Private in Co. A, 16th VT INF. After mustering out 8/10/63; he enlisted again 2/8/64 as a Private in Co. F, 17th VT INF and was transferred to Co. D, 5/1/64, and promoted to Corporal 11/5/64. George was promoted to Sergeant 5/9/65, and made 2 Lieut. on 7/10/65. 
Born in 1845, He died 09/20/1908.
