Pauline Carter was born to a farm family in rural Mississippi, the 4th child of Thomas Isaac (Ike) and Winnie Ethyl (Wammack) Carter. Siblings were Leland, Euclid, Mary, Sarah, Eunice, Louise, Bonna Ruth, and Joan. She graduated from high school in 1937, then from Northeast Mississippi School of Nursing. She married 2nd Lt. John Lee Richie of Booneville, MS on November 9, 1942. Children: Martha Ellen (Davis) b. Jan 29, 1944 and John Carter b. Nov. 19, 1953. She was "Gran" to Reid, Carter, and Stephen Davis and to Katie, Thomas, and Claire Richie. Many years of her marriage were spent as a military wife. She was active in her church and community wherever she lived, and in the twenty years following retirement, she was active in Second Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC. She served quietly and faithfully, avoiding the limelight. She was often called upon in crises because of her steadiness and quiet competence. In the years after her children were grown, she was on staff of Grady Hipp Nursing Home. She suffered from Early Onset Alzheimer's and died in 1993.
